Maintenance-Free Bonsai Landscape in the Living Room
A planter behind the sofa offers an ideal opportunity to bring nature right into the living room. In this location, however, planting with real, living plants presented some practical challenges: the area behind the furniture simply received too little daylight, while regular watering in such a difficult-to-reach spot proved inconvenient in everyday life.
The customer was therefore specifically looking for a maintenance-free solution that would stand apart from conventional indoor planting and become a genuine focal point in the room. Together, we opted for an arrangement of real preserved Juniperus bonsai trees. Combining trees of different heights makes optimal use of the planter's depth and creates a calm, elegant feature behind the sofa.
The preserved bonsai trees bring a natural, timeless atmosphere to the living room while creating a striking visual highlight. As the trees require absolutely no daylight, the arrangement retains its fresh appearance and rich colour even in this darker location. The result combines real nature with maximum everyday convenience: no watering, no dirt on the upholstery or parquet flooring, and no maintenance or pruning for many years.
From Design Concept to Bonsai Landscape
A Bespoke Solution for a Low-Light Planter
The customer approached us with a specific request: the existing planter behind the sofa had previously been filled with live indoor plants. In everyday use, however, it became clear that the low-light location was challenging for the plants. Constantly watering them directly above the sofa cushions was also inconvenient and delicate. The customer was therefore looking for a durable, completely maintenance-free alternative that would enhance the planter while clearly standing apart from conventional indoor planting.
Based on photos of the existing planted arrangement, we analysed the situation and developed several design concepts. To make the effect tangible before implementation, we created true-to-scale digital visualisations directly within an image of the living room. The option featuring our real preserved bonsai trees immediately won the customer over: it looks exceptionally elegant, offers something genuinely distinctive beyond standard indoor plants and requires neither maintenance nor light.
Real Preserved Juniperus Bonsai Trees in Coordinated Sizes
For the planter, five elegant juniper trees were selected in three harmoniously coordinated sizes:
• One large 160 cm Juniperus bonsai tree forms the central feature.
• Two 100 cm Juniperus bonsai trees flank the centre and create balanced depth towards the sides.
• Two compact 25 cm Juniperus bonsai trees naturally and densely fill the lower section of the planter.
Thanks to the gentle, natural-based preservation process, the needles remain soft while the gnarled wooden trunks retain their authentic texture. The plants keep their rich green appearance for many years, without soil, fertiliser or sunlight.
