Outdoor greenery with forest moss

Can a green wall positively influence the waste disposal behavior of an entire community? This exact question is being explored in an innovative pilot project in Stallikon. As part of a bachelor thesis at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW), supported by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), the idea emerged to upgrade a conventional disposal site through targeted greenery. The goal was to improve the quality of organic waste and reduce contamination in green waste.

We supported this scientifically backed project with our expertise in outdoor greenery. Where there was once a bare concrete wall, lush natural forest moss now welcomes residents at the disposal site. This project clearly demonstrates that our moss solutions go far beyond decoration. They act as a psychological element, encouraging environmental awareness and promoting responsible everyday behavior. An inspiring concept showing how municipalities can achieve measurable ecological improvements through nature-based design.

Weatherproof outdoor moss wall

Engineered for extreme conditions

Unlike indoor moss walls, this installation in Stallikon was specifically designed to withstand outdoor conditions. Exposed to extreme weather, the system is based on a technically advanced structure. A water-resistant Tricoya panel forms the base, remaining highly durable and resistant to fungi even in humid environments. The forest moss used is treated with 100% natural ingredients and is fully UV-resistant, ensuring long-lasting color intensity without damaging the moss structure.

Robust installation and protection in public spaces

A key difference lies in the mounting system and surface protection. As the installation is located in a public space, durability was essential. The panels were installed on a ventilated wooden substructure to ensure proper air circulation and prevent moisture buildup. A flexible honeycomb mesh protects the moss surface from external influences such as storms, hail, or birds without affecting its natural look. Despite a tight project timeline, the installation was completed on schedule.

Sustainable impact without maintenance

This outdoor greenery solution stands out for being completely maintenance-free. The moss system requires no watering, fertilizing, or trimming. It serves as a long-lasting green highlight that visually supports the FOEN pilot project.

As the FHNW student explains: “We want to green the disposal site to promote proper waste sorting behavior.” This project proves that professionally designed outdoor greenery can be an effective tool to enhance public spaces and support ecological goals.
